From outer appearances it looks as though the world is falling apart. Yet, I believe the chaos we are experiencing is a part of healing process we, as a planet, must go through. I see it as a self-correction. And yes, it’s uncomfortable.

So how do we navigate through this turbulence without bringing fear and worry into our lives? I suggest, instead of worrying about the future, we focus instead on what is happening in each moment of our day. After all, that’s all we have…this moment.

The news tries to pull us into the drama of war, a failing economy and what could happen. We are taught if we can control or manipulate the people and/or circumstances around us then we can win our freedom and be happy. This choice is from a place of fear and is only
feeding the flames of the very fear and destruction we are trying to stop.

It’s time to focus on a much bigger picture.

Remember, what we see around us is only a reflection of what’s going on inside us. When we try to change people or circumstances to bring us more peace it’s like trying to change the reflection in a mirror. To create lasting peace, we must change the object that is causing the reflection in the first place….our fears, thoughts, beliefs and feelings toward our self, each other and the world.

Below are 10 ways you can help create a peaceful world.

1. Celebrate yourself, your life and all the good you bring to the world. As we are lifted up, all of life is lifted up.
2. Celebrate others and all the good they bring to the world. There is no room for competition or jealousy in today’s world. Encourage and celebrate others so they can shine and add their light to the world.
3. Refuse to see borders. The “us against them” mentality is a big part of what’s killing peace and the world. The truth is we are all connected. There is no separation. We are one.
4. Do a simple act of kindness to a stranger once a day. A peaceful world begins in each individual heart. Even a smile can lift someone from a dark place to a hopeful, peaceful place.
5. Learn to love your body. Instead of noticing what you don’t like about yourself turn it around. Be grateful for your health. Celebrate your ability to get out of bed in the morning, get dressed and go about your day. Notice what you DO like when you look in the mirror and smile.
6. Stop judging and comparing yourself to others. You are not the other person. You do not know the pain or confusion pulsating through their body, mind and heart. Trade judgment for compassion.
7. Be responsible for your impact. Your words, thoughts, feelings and actions impact both you and the world. Notice them.
8. Remember no one is in charge of your happiness or inner peace except for you. Inner peace and happiness are a choice. The difference between annoyance and inner peace is only a perspective.
9. Make peace with your past. The past is over. Let it go and move forward. When you do, you’ll feel lighter and more peaceful…and that peace will ripple out into the world.
10. Practice meditation and prayer. Ask for guidance. Go within. As you do you become more peaceful, and as you become more peaceful you contribute to world peace.

When you fully embrace and live the spirit of peace from within, peace flows from you into the world igniting hope, harmony, compassion and understanding. Let the spirit of peace be expressed through you as you consciously move through your day.

Take Action Now

What are some of the ways you create peace within yourself? I asked this question to a group of people last week. Below are some of what they shared:

1. Time in nature
2. Time with pets
3. Art based activities
4. Gardening
5. Serving others
6. Play
7. Dancing or listening to music
8. Making love
9. Collaborating with others

I suggest you take a moment right now. Remembering peace begins within you, write down three ways you can help create a more peaceful world. Commit to doing at least one a day. As we are lifted up, all of life is lifted up.
