Thanks! At present, I’m in what has been referred to as the “Sandwich Generation”. That time when our children are stepping out on their own, in that uncomfortable stage of transition as they explore life as young adults, not fully clear or confident with who they are becoming or how they will get “there”. The other piece of bread consists of course of our parents, who are also going through transition of their own, and are also daunted with their futures, but in a different way.
And, there’s us, the meat and cheese in the middle. As the protein or substance of the family, we’re praying we’ve done our job both as “good parents” and as “good kids”. We silently pray our children courageously step into this new world, confidently claiming their independence as they leave the “nest”. And at the same time, witnessing our parent’s transition, courageously returning to a world of dependence, once again, learning to ask for help.
What does it take to stand strong in times of transition? Who do we need to be, as we stay present to what is, taking care of ourselves as we support those we love the most?
